The analysis of the 2024 returns reveals the deteriorating demographic situation in Greece, with few households having children - Families with two children declare the highest income, averaging 29,514 euros

The latest data from the 2024 tax returns show that only about two out of ten households declare having children, which clearly reflects the severe demographic problem facing Greece.
The majority of families, almost nine out of ten, have up to two children, while the percentage of families with three or more children is very low, with only 130,609 taxpayers declaring themselves as belonging to this category.
Among occupational groups, employees appear to have the largest number of children, followed by self-employed persons.
According to the analysis of the tax data, families with children employed as employees reach 719,155, while some 306,978 families with children are declared by self-employed persons.
In absolute numbers, a total of 4,112,472 taxpayers, who are either single, retired or widowed, have no children, while of the 1,324,342 married couples without children, more than half, 660,360, are retired, with 110,125 of them having dependents.

Income declared by single people and families The total data from the 6,720,037 tax returns filed show that 80.9% of households have no children.

In particular:

  • Unmarried taxpayers number 4,112,472, with a total declared income of about 40 billion euros, or an average income of 9,731 euros, while the total tax paid reaches 4.073 billion euros, corresponding to an average tax of 990 euros per person.
  • Married couples without children totalled 1,324,342 and declared a total income of 31.5 billion euros. The average declared income is 23,805 euros and the average tax is 2,700 euros.
  • Families with one child are 616,119 and declared a total income of 15.12 billion euros, with an average income of 24,553 euros and an average tax of 3,257 euros.
  • Families with two children amount to 536,495 and declared a total of 15.83 billion euros. The average declared income in this category is 29,514 euros and the average tax is 4,071 euros. This is the category with the highest average income and therefore the highest taxes.
  • There are 108,067 families with three children and they declared a total of €3 billion. The average income is 28,260 euros and the average tax is 3,529 euros. The number of families with four children is decreasing significantly, as there are only 17,839. In total they declare incomes of 431.3 million euros, with an average income of 24,178 euros and an average tax of 2,689 euros.
  • Finally, families with five or more children amount to 3,190 and declare a total income of 56.7 million euros. The average income in this category is significantly lower, at 17,783 euros, while the average tax is limited to 1,688 euros.

These figures confirm the picture of a society with smaller families and a gradual decrease in the number of multi-member households, which raises serious concerns about the future of the demographic problem in our country.

The financial burden corresponding to households with children shows that, despite the higher incomes reported by families with two or three children, their total number is limited, which exacerbates the problem of ageing and reduced population renewal.
